# PsyCove > An independent cognitive function test and reference. 96 questions over Jung's eight functions, scored against the Grant/Brownsword stack model. Free result with a ranked function profile, the four-function stack, a confidence reading and a consistency reading. No account; answers never leave the browser. Four-letter type codes are used as common community notation. This site is not affiliated with The Myers-Briggs Company and reproduces no proprietary instrument content. ## The test - [Cognitive function test](https://www.psycove.com/test): 96 statements, twelve per function, two reverse-scored per function, split into 4 chapters. Free and browser-only. ## The eight functions - [Ni — Introverted Intuition](https://www.psycove.com/functions/Ni): Convergent foresight — many possibilities collapse into one inevitable pattern. - [Ne — Extraverted Intuition](https://www.psycove.com/functions/Ne): Divergent possibility — one stimulus, an explosion of what-else. - [Si — Introverted Sensing](https://www.psycove.com/functions/Si): Subjective impression, stored and compared — the world against your internal reference. - [Se — Extraverted Sensing](https://www.psycove.com/functions/Se): Unmediated contact with the present — what is actually here, right now. - [Ti — Introverted Thinking](https://www.psycove.com/functions/Ti): First-principles internal logic — build the model yourself, or trust nothing. - [Te — Extraverted Thinking](https://www.psycove.com/functions/Te): External structure — measure it, sequence it, make the outcome happen. - [Fi — Introverted Feeling](https://www.psycove.com/functions/Fi): Private value hierarchy — what is right, regardless of what is wanted. - [Fe — Extraverted Feeling](https://www.psycove.com/functions/Fe): Relational field awareness — read it, hold it, move it. ## The sixteen types - [INTJ — The Architect](https://www.psycove.com/types/INTJ): A single long-range system, built relentlessly in private. Stack: Ni → Te → Fi → Se. - [INTP — The Logician](https://www.psycove.com/types/INTP): The model must be correct, even if nothing is ever built with it. Stack: Ti → Ne → Si → Fe. - [ENTJ — The Commander](https://www.psycove.com/types/ENTJ): Build the structure, then make reality conform to it. Stack: Te → Ni → Se → Fi. - [ENTP — The Debater](https://www.psycove.com/types/ENTP): Every settled thing is one question away from falling apart. Stack: Ne → Ti → Fe → Si. - [INFJ — The Advocate](https://www.psycove.com/types/INFJ): A private vision of what people could become, carried quietly. Stack: Ni → Fe → Ti → Se. - [INFP — The Mediator](https://www.psycove.com/types/INFP): An absolute inner compass, expressed through endless possibility. Stack: Fi → Ne → Si → Te. - [ENFJ — The Protagonist](https://www.psycove.com/types/ENFJ): Move the group by understanding where each person is going. Stack: Fe → Ni → Se → Ti. - [ENFP — The Campaigner](https://www.psycove.com/types/ENFP): Everything could be more; everything could mean more. Stack: Ne → Fi → Te → Si. - [ISTJ — The Logistician](https://www.psycove.com/types/ISTJ): Standards, held quietly and without exception. Stack: Se → Fi → Te → Ni. ## Research notes - [The share of people in your type is a range, not a number](https://www.psycove.com/research/type-share-is-a-range): Ask what percentage of people share your type and you will get a confident answer, usually with a decimal point. That answer is a point estimate from a sample somebody else recruited. Two of the largest published tables for the same instrument disagree about which type is rarest, and for eleven of the sixteen types the gap between them is wider than their own sampling error allows. The disagreement is not noise. It is a measurement of who was counted. - [Why four-letter results change between sittings](https://www.psycove.com/research/why-dichotomy-tests-flip): A dichotomy test asks you to compare yourself to an average person. An average person is not a fixed reference, so your answer moves with your mood, your week, and the comparison you happen to be holding in mind. Function-level questions ask about behaviour you can actually recall, which is far more stable. - [What a flat function profile actually means](https://www.psycove.com/research/reading-a-flat-profile): When all eight functions land between 45 and 60, most tests will still hand you a confident four-letter label. That label is arithmetically meaningless. A flat profile usually means one of three things: you are mid-development, you answered from a role rather than a baseline, or you genuinely sit near an axis midpoint. - [Shadow functions: why your weakest trait is also your blind spot](https://www.psycove.com/research/shadow-functions-explained): In the Grant stack the four functions not in your stack are the attitude-flipped versions of the four that are. INTJ runs Ni–Te–Fi–Se, so its shadow is Ne–Ti–Fe–Si. Under sustained stress the inferior function does not merely weaken — it takes the wheel, which is why stress behaviour often looks like a caricature of your own weakest function. - [Mistype is the norm, not the exception](https://www.psycove.com/research/mistype-rate-baseline): Function-level testing consistently disagrees with dichotomy testing for a substantial minority of people. The disagreement is not random: it clusters around specific pairs — INTJ/INTP, INFJ/INFP, ENTP/ENFP — because those pairs differ mainly in which function leads, and a comparative questionnaire cannot see that. ## Type comparisons - [INTJ vs INTP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/INTJ-vs-INTP): The Architect or The Logician — how to tell them apart. - [INTJ vs ENTJ](https://www.psycove.com/vs/INTJ-vs-ENTJ): The Architect or The Commander — how to tell them apart. - [INTJ vs ENTP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/INTJ-vs-ENTP): The Architect or The Debater — how to tell them apart. - [INTP vs ENTJ](https://www.psycove.com/vs/INTP-vs-ENTJ): The Logician or The Commander — how to tell them apart. - [INTP vs ENTP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/INTP-vs-ENTP): The Logician or The Debater — how to tell them apart. - [ENTJ vs ENTP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ENTJ-vs-ENTP): The Commander or The Debater — how to tell them apart. - [INFJ vs INFP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/INFJ-vs-INFP): The Advocate or The Mediator — how to tell them apart. - [INFJ vs ENFJ](https://www.psycove.com/vs/INFJ-vs-ENFJ): The Advocate or The Protagonist — how to tell them apart. - [INFJ vs ENFP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/INFJ-vs-ENFP): The Advocate or The Campaigner — how to tell them apart. - [INFP vs ENFJ](https://www.psycove.com/vs/INFP-vs-ENFJ): The Mediator or The Protagonist — how to tell them apart. - [INFP vs ENFP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/INFP-vs-ENFP): The Mediator or The Campaigner — how to tell them apart. - [ENFJ vs ENFP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ENFJ-vs-ENFP): The Protagonist or The Campaigner — how to tell them apart. - [ISTJ vs ISFJ](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ISTJ-vs-ISFJ): The Logistician or The Defender — how to tell them apart. - [ISTJ vs ESTJ](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ISTJ-vs-ESTJ): The Logistician or The Executive — how to tell them apart. - [ISTJ vs ESFJ](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ISTJ-vs-ESFJ): The Logistician or The Consul — how to tell them apart. - [ISFJ vs ESTJ](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ISFJ-vs-ESTJ): The Defender or The Executive — how to tell them apart. - [ISFJ vs ESFJ](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ISFJ-vs-ESFJ): The Defender or The Consul — how to tell them apart. - [ESTJ vs ESFJ](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ESTJ-vs-ESFJ): The Executive or The Consul — how to tell them apart. - [ISTP vs ISFP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ISTP-vs-ISFP): The Virtuoso or The Adventurer — how to tell them apart. - [ISTP vs ESTP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ISTP-vs-ESTP): The Virtuoso or The Entrepreneur — how to tell them apart. - [ISTP vs ESFP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ISTP-vs-ESFP): The Virtuoso or The Entertainer — how to tell them apart. - [ISFP vs ESTP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ISFP-vs-ESTP): The Adventurer or The Entrepreneur — how to tell them apart. - [ISFP vs ESFP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ISFP-vs-ESFP): The Adventurer or The Entertainer — how to tell them apart. - [ESTP vs ESFP](https://www.psycove.com/vs/ESTP-vs-ESFP): The Entrepreneur or The Entertainer — how to tell them apart. ## Blog - [Why Your Personality Type Keeps Changing](https://www.psycove.com/blog/why-your-type-keeps-changing): Retest variability, the continuum behind each letter, and what a shifting result actually means. - [Is the Eight-Function Model Scientific?](https://www.psycove.com/blog/is-the-eight-function-model-scientific): What the model is and is not supported to claim, and how to use it without overclaiming. - [How to Find Your True Type](https://www.psycove.com/blog/how-to-find-your-true-type): A behavior-first path through mistypes, midline functions, and state-affect contamination. - [The Eight Cognitive Functions Explained](https://www.psycove.com/blog/cognitive-functions-explained): What each function is, how the positions lock together, and why the stack beats the letters. - [Introversion vs Extraversion](https://www.psycove.com/blog/introversion-vs-extraversion): The attitude is a property of your dominant function, not a yes/no question. - [Feeling vs Thinking](https://www.psycove.com/blog/feeling-vs-thinking): F is a values-based decider, not "emotional";
