INFJ vs INFP

The Advocate · The Mediator

INFJ and INFP are both Idealists. They get confused for good reason — three of four letters are the same, and the difference comes down to which cognitive function leads the stack. Here is the stack, where they overlap, and how to tell which one is yours.

The two stacks

PositionINFJINFP
DominantNi · Introverted IntuitionFi · Introverted Feeling
AuxiliaryFe · Extraverted FeelingNe · Extraverted Intuition
TertiaryTi · Introverted ThinkingSi · Introverted Sensing
InferiorSe · Extraverted SensingTe · Extraverted Thinking

They do not place a single function in the same position. INFJ leads with Ni (Introverted Intuition); INFP leads with Fi (Introverted Feeling).

In plain words

INFJ

Ni provides a deep, singular read on where a person or situation is heading; Fe translates that read into attunement and care. Ti supplies the analytical spine, and Se is the physical present that INFJs repeatedly have to be reminded to inhabit.

INFP

Fi maintains a private, non-negotiable hierarchy of what matters; Ne explores what forms that meaning could take. Si keeps a chamber of particular, sentimental memories, and Te is the external execution the INFP wishes came more naturally.

Why people mix them up

Frequently mistyped as INFP or as INTP. The tell: INFJ care is organised around a vision of the other person's trajectory (Ni first), whereas INFP care is organised around the other person's authenticity and their own values (Fi first).

At their best

INFJ

Insightful service — you understand people at a level they have not articulated to themselves, and you act on it in ways that actually help rather than flatter.

INFP

Moral imagination — you can imagine another person from the inside and hold a principle when holding it is costly.

Under stress

INFJ

Inferior Se erupts as sensory excess or shutdown: binge behaviour, obsessive focus on appearance or physical symptoms, or complete withdrawal from the body and the environment.

INFP

Inferior Te erupts as harsh, uncharacteristic criticism: sudden blunt assessment of others' incompetence, or a frantic rush to impose order and structure on a life that suddenly feels out of control.

Frequently asked

What is the main difference between INFJ and INFP?

INFJ leads with Ni (Introverted Intuition); INFP leads with Fi (Introverted Feeling). That single difference in the lead function changes how each type takes in information, makes decisions, and shows up under pressure.

How do I know if I am INFJ or INFP?

Descriptions are seductive — most people recognise something in both. The reliable way is to score the eight functions directly: INFJ is defined by a Ni lead, INFP by a Fi lead. When the measured profile puts Ni first, the label follows.

Can someone be both INFJ and INFP?

No. A type is an ordering of the four functions, not a vibe — exactly one function leads. People test close because both are Idealists. The test resolves the tie by ranking the functions.

Do INFJ and INFP get along?

INFJ and INFP share the Idealists outlook, but their different lead functions pull them toward different defaults. INFJ tends to Insightful service — you understand people at a level they have not articulated to themselves, and you act on it in ways that actually help rather than flatter. INFP tends to Moral imagination — you can imagine another person from the inside and hold a principle when holding it is costly. Naming the difference early beats resenting it later.
